The OpenDime

The OpenDime is a physical form of Bitcoin and is one of the coolest pieces of tech that I've come across lately.

There's something so cyberbunk (or more appropriately, cypherpunk) about the OpenDime.

What is the OpenDime?

The OpenDime is a physical incarnation of Bitcoin and is one of the coolest pieces of tech that I've come across lately. You can learn more about it with the following video or at its public GitHub repo.

Though OpenDimes can arguably be used for in-person and instant final-settlement transactions with Bitcoin, the main use-case that I currently see for the device is for gifting Bitcoin to someone.

The device generates its own public/private key pair with the private key being obscured until the bearer wishes to move the allocated funds elsewhere. To do so, the bearer essentially breaks it open like a piggy bank. Once that is done, the device is rendered useless and can be tossed away or saved as memorabilia. I think it's a very cool gift that also encourages the recipient to learn more about Bitcoin.

Another unique yet obscure use-case for the OpenDime is the facilitation of real-life treasure hunting!  There's a cool site called xmarksthebitcoin.com that periodically posts treasures that are crowdfunded and hidden across the world. Each treasure can be found through clues listed on the site – Finders keepers!
